English Translation (Auction Description) France / Pioneers of Ballooning – G. Hervieu & Ch. Gilbert (Parc Aérostatique de la Seine): Historical Business Letter, Written by Gaston Hervieu and Double-Signed by Both Partners, Featuring a Splendid Lithographed Letterhead, Nanterre, March 18, 1898 Description of the Object: An exceptional and richly illustrated document from the early days of commercial ballooning and aerial acrobatics. It is a two-page, folded business letter bearing the elaborately lithographed letterhead of the "Parc Aérostatique de la Seine" in Nanterre (Avenue de Neuilly), dated March 18, 1898. Content Focus: The main text was written by the renowned engineer, inventor, and aeronaut Gaston Hervieu (1863–1923) and is addressed to the President of the Festival Committee of the city of Calais. In it, the partners offer their proven balloon ascents and patented attractions for the upcoming festival season. The focus lies on their special "Aéro-cycle" system (bicycle riding suspended beneath a balloon) as well as experiments with military pigeon post (combined pioneering trials conducted under the civil and military patronage of the French Ministry of War). The letter combines commercial acquisition with the technical pride of the era preceding motorized flight. At the end of the main text, as well as in a handwritten postscript ("P.S."), the document is double-signed by the partners and Charles Gilbert, respectively. Biographical Tribute & Historical Context: 1. The Protagonists and Their Joint Heyday (1890s): • Gaston Hervieu (1863–1923): The French balloonist, engineer, and technical inventor was the driving force behind the Parc Aérostatique de la Seine. He patented various safety and ascent systems, shaped the exhibition aeronautics of the era, and later participated in the official ballooning competitions of the Paris Universal Exposition during the 1900 Olympic Games. • Charles Gilbert: As a business partner and co-owner (G. Hervieu & Ch. Gilbert), he shared the patents (Brevets S.G.D.G.) and the management of the manufacturing facility in Nanterre. Together, they dominated the market for spectacular exhibition and sporting flights in the late 19th century (including in Paris, Rouen, Deauville, and Béthune) and cleverly combined ballooning with modern sports and military reconnaissance. Gilbert later expanded his activities internationally (including tethered balloon projects in Russia well into the 1900s). 2. Parting of Ways: With the rapid rise of motorized aviation (Aviation) after the turn of the century, the market for pure balloon exhibitions underwent a fundamental transformation. The joint entrepreneurial era of the two pioneers drew to a close, and both pursued independent paths in the newly forming world of flight. Condition & Preservation: Two-page, folded letter sheet featuring the charming, fully lithographed letterhead (including illustrations of their balloon and parachute systems). Good, age-appropriate condition with strong, clearly legible ink; a small tear in both the vertical and horizontal folds (professionally untouched and stable). A historically dense, museum-grade document of early French aviation history. 2. 3.
