The composition offers a remarkable urban atmosphere: a watercourse runs through the foreground, lined with houses with aged façades, while a vaulted stone bridge structures the center of the scene. In the background appear the city roofs and a slender bell tower, giving depth and character to the perspective. The painting is executed with a generous and expressive brushwork, particularly visible in the façades, the reflections on the water, and the sky. The impastos add substantial body and relief to the whole. The palette, consisting of ochres, earth tones, grays, and orange hues, charmingly captures the atmosphere of the old quarters of northern France.
