French Neo-Renaissance Bronze Ewer – The Putti Pitcher...

The Putti Jug – Neorenaissance Bronze Decanter by an imposing bronze decorative object in a French Neorenaissance taste, attributed to the early 20th century. Standing 390 mm tall and weighing 4,067 grams, this elaborate artifact represents an interesting example of European decorative arts, when Renaissance forms were reinterpreted through rich sculptural ornamentation intended for representative environments and private collections. The composition echoes the shape of the aiguière, the traditional decanter with a raised base, a pronounced spout, and a side handle. Originally used to contain and pour liquids, these vessels gradually acquired a predominantly decorative function, transforming into parade pieces prized for the quality of the casting and the complexity of the decorations. The central body, wide and rounded, is entirely surrounded by an elaborate frieze of putti modeled in high relief. The small figures proceed in a scene rich in movement: some seem to dance, others interact through gestures and varied postures. The bodies, modeled with evident attention to volume, form a continuous composition that follows the curvature of the vessel. The putti belong to a long iconographic tradition that traces back to classical antiquity. Reinterpreted by Renaissance artists, they became protagonists of sculptures, fountains, furniture, and goldsmiths’ objects, evoking themes of love, vitality, play, and abundance. The upper part presents a long spout with an asymmetrical profile, opening outward in a nearly foliate form. The neck is adorned with volutes, vegetal motifs, and small relief ornaments, while the handle constitutes a particularly interesting sculptural element. Its arched structure is composed of a tangle of volutes and anthropomorphic figures, among which a female figure emerges at the top. The whole transforms the simple handle into an autonomous decorative construction in which the functional element blends with the figurative repertoire. The lower part of the decanter features mascarons, foliate work, and ornamental motifs that accompany the transition to the foot. The latter, heavily modulated, ends in a wide circular base decorated, giving balance and monumentality to the composition. The surface retains a brown patina with warm coppery tones, with darker areas and light greenish oxidation spots, particularly visible in the recesses. The contrast between projecting parts and those in shadow enhances the depth of the reliefs and allows the numerous details of the workmanship to be appreciated. During the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, French manufactories developed a vast production of decorative bronzes inspired by Italian and French Renaissance models. Decanters, cups, candelabras, clocks, and monumental vases entered the furnishing of private homes and decorative arts collections. This specimen stylistically belongs to that tradition, in which ornamental richness and the revival of classical iconography transformed utilitarian objects into true sculptural compositions. With its 39 cm height and over 4 kg in weight, the decanter possesses a strong display presence, particularly suitable for a collection of antique bronzes, a library, a private study, or a Wunderkammer devoted to curiosities and decorative arts. An object of eclectic character, interesting for its elaborate figurative decoration, the peculiar shape of the handle, and the richness of ornamental details.
