French Marine Nationale – CECMED / Préfet Maritime de la Méditerranée – Heavy Bronze Presentation Plaque A substantial and highly decorative cast bronze presentation plaque/emblem associated with the French Marine Nationale and the Mediterranean naval command at Toulon. The plaque bears the inscriptions: “PRÉFET MARITIME” “COMMANDANT EN CHEF POUR LA MÉDITERRANÉE” These titles refer to the senior French naval and maritime authority responsible for the Mediterranean, based at Toulon. The elaborate heraldic design incorporates important French Mediterranean naval symbolism, including naval anchors, stars, maritime motifs and heraldic elements associated with Toulon and the historic Mediterranean provinces. The plaque is particularly impressive for its size and weight. It is a very heavy cast-metal piece, weighing approximately 1.32 kg despite measuring only 17 × 11 cm. The reverse features a central threaded mounting stud, indicating that it was designed for secure mounting or presentation rather than being a simple flat decorative plaque. The surface has developed an attractive aged brown and green patina, with areas of verdigris, oxidation and surface wear which contribute to its character.
