Francis Bacon (1909–1992) – Metropolitan (Metropolitan Museum of Art), 1975 Francis Bacon is one of the most important British artists of the 20th century. His painting revolves around distorted human figures, isolated bodies, and the tension between figuration and abstraction. He drew on old masters, photography, film, and literature, creating a personal, often confrontational visual language. In Metropolitan (1975) the human body is again central. The figures are recognizable but heavily deformed, lacking traditional anatomy. The monumental seated body, the figures in the background, and the geometrically delineated spaces create a Baconian tension between human and artificial, almost stage-like surroundings. The dark planes reinforce a sense of isolation and psychological intensity. The title refers to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and fits Bacon’s ongoing dialogue with art history. This stone-signed lithograph is printed on handmade Privilege Cotton paper, in a limited edition of 250 copies. The work is pencil-numbered, bears the embossing of The Shakespeare Arts, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
