Furthermore, for 1809 and maritime history, Brittany and the Atlantic coasts suffer the British blockade (as in the Battle of Les Sables-d’Olonne or the affair of fireships at Île d’Aix) "My dear General, I have duly received the letter you honored me with on October 14 at the Bay of Quiberon and since then I have not had a single opportunity to write to you. I take advantage of the occasion of the little Le Cerne that I am forced to send back to France so as not to see him butchered, to give you news of myself. I learned with the greatest pleasure of your happy arrival in France; I am penetrated by all you tell me — of obliging and friendly in your estimable letter, I sincerely repay you in kind, oh! may God grant that we live in times more happy, which would enable me to show you all my gratitude for the words of friendship you have shown us all; we often speak of you in our ordinary society which has not grown since your departure, and which is much sadder since you left us. I give you many thanks for the kindness you showed in sending my packages to Mr. Guillot; I hope that circumstances did not prevent you from seeing him, you will have found in him a brave and worthy friend. If you have the opportunity to see or write to General de Laborde, please remind him of my remembrance, and if you see the amiable friend Crofi, please tell him many kind regards from me. The brave and respectable Mr. De Carvalho as well as Madame and the rest of the family, not forgetting little Marianne and the chancellor with a more sensitive memory of you and sending you a thousand and thousand wishes, our existence since your departure has become very sad and seems to become more so. Farewell, my dear General, be happy, if it is possible to be so in the madness of the century in which we live and deign to accept the estimable expression of my highest esteem and of all my consideration.
