Solid 9s $1 Silver Certificate Issued Under the Series of 1935A Fr. 1608. 1935A $1 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Solid Serial Number J99999999C. JC Block. Absent any hint of doubt, it takes little to figure that solid serial numbers are immensely popular with collectors. These notes are rare overall but can be had with a degree of patience at auction while most patterns are readily available with certain numbers commanding significant premiums like "7" or "8." Those that feature serial numbers composed solely of the number "9" are nonetheless extremely rare and veritable trophies for serval reasons. One such reason is that the highest number that can be achieved with an eight-digit numbering wheel will always be "99999999." Yet a caveat which acts as a proverbial wrench must also be considered. The Series of 1974 was the last where production blocks intended for general circulation went all the way to "99999999" before "96000000" became the highest serial number that could be used for Federal Reserve Notes intended for commercial channels. Today serial numbers comprised solely of the number "9" are the dominion of some souvenir sets and older uncut sheets sold by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing as in the case of some pieces that were discovered by a few lucky collectors. Now this example is a $1 Silver Certificate issued under the Series of 1935A which predates the described practices by decades, but it still cannot escape the inherent allure of the number "9" and "99999999." Bidders should readily expect this note to foster a competitive bidding process as opportunities to acquire a trophy on par with this one are truly rare indeed. Estimate: $12,500 - $17,500.
