Fr. 1128. 1914 $100 Federal Reserve Note. San Francisco. PMG Choice

Fr. 1128. 1914 $100 Federal Reserve Note. San Francisco. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. Long synonymous with the $100 denomination, the engraved portrait of Benjamin Franklin was hardly a new sight when the first $100 Federal Reserve Notes left the Bureau of Engraving & Printing in 1914. First placed (as the primary subject) on the redesigned $50 Legal Tender Notes issued under the Series of 1874. That engraved reproduction of Franklin dating to the 1870s was adapted from the Duplessis Portrait which formed the basis of Franklin's subsequent appearance on the post-1928 $100 Federal Reserve Notes and the short-lived $100 Legal Tender Notes of the 1960s and 1970s. Franklin also appeared on the $10 National Bank Note from 1863 through the 1920s as part of a vignette entitled Franklin and Electricity and again as part of the engraved adaptation of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence which had been used for the $100 National Bank Note and later the $2 Federal Reserve Note starting with the Series of 1976. The depiction of Franklin on the $100 Federal Reserve Note issued under the Series of 1914 is something of an anomaly compared to these depictions, but in any case, it represents a fine testament to an influential American personality exemplified by the many uncommon qualities demonstrated by this lovely specimen from the San Francisco district. Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
