Fossil Dragonfly Larvae plate - Fossil matrix - Libellula...

A genuine fossil insect larva belonging to the order Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), preserved on a fine-grained shale slab dating to the Miocene Epoch, approximately 23–5 million years ago. Despite its modest size, the specimen displays remarkable preservation. The body outline is clearly visible, including the head, thoracic region, elongated abdomen, and delicate legs. The fossil offers a fascinating glimpse into the juvenile stage of an ancient odonate, a group of insects that has inhabited freshwater environments for hundreds of millions of years. The dark fossilized remains contrast beautifully against the pale sedimentary matrix, allowing the anatomical features to stand out with surprising clarity. Fine details of the exoskeleton and body segmentation remain discernible, making the specimen both scientifically interesting and visually appealing. Preserved in its original shale matrix, the fossil retains a natural and authentic appearance, reflecting the quiet depositional environments in which these delicate organisms could be fossilized. The slab has been left largely unaltered, emphasizing the specimen's genuine paleontological character. The larva itself measures approximately 1.7 × 1.6 cm and is presented on a acrylic display stand, included with the specimen for immediate exhibition. An attractive and educational fossil, well suited for collectors of fossil insects, paleoentomology enthusiasts, and natural history collections, while also serving as a distinctive display piece that illustrates the remarkable preservation of ancient freshwater life.
