Folding screen with ceremonial court blinds - Paper

A superb two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) by Kunii Ōbun 國井應文 (1833–1887) depicting a Maruyama School painting of an elegant misu 御簾 (ceremonial court bamboo blind). Set against a shimmering gold leaf background. The green blind is partially rolled up and held open by ornate gilt metal lifting hooks, revealing its finely woven bamboo slats. It is finished with long decorative tassels in white, vermilion, and black. Traditionally associated with the Imperial Court and aristocratic residences, the misu served both as an architectural furnishing and as a symbol of refinement and rank. The painting is signed in the lower right corner ‘Painted by Ôbun’ 應文寫, and accompanied by two name seals. Kunii Ōbun 國井應文 (1833–1887) was a Kyoto painter active during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. A nephew of Maruyama Ôshin 円山応震, he studied under Maruyama Ôryû 円山応立 and became known for his landscapes and kachôga 花鳥画 (bird-and-flower paintings). In 1884 he exhibited View of the Katsura Imperial Villa Garden 桂御所御庭図 and Flowers and Birds 花鳥 at the 2nd Naikoku Kaiga Kyôshinkai 内国絵画共進会 (Domestic Painting Exhibition), where he received an official commendation. Executed in colour and gold on gold leaf. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame. Period: Japan – Bakumatsu period/Early Meiji (1853-1887) Dimensions: Height 170.1 cm; Width 187.0 cm (2 × 93.5 cm). In very good restored condition with repapered patches on the reverse. Minor paint loss is visible in the upper centre of the left panel. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall as a decorative work of art, but can also be displayed as a freestanding piece. When shipped, we will add a certificate of authenticity.
