全部拍賣 / Ancient Art / Folding screen - Burr walnut - Kashmiri room screen 1915
Monumental 4-piece Kashmiri room screen – deeply hand-carved and intricately pierced wood – floral motifs – circa 1900–1930 Exceptionally large and richly executed four-part room screen, presumably from Kashmir / North India and dating from the first half of the 20th century. The screen stands out especially for the exceptionally large amount of deeply hand-carved and fully pierced relief work. The panels are built from floral vines, blossoms and characteristic leaf motifs, with leaves and branches cut at different levels over and under one another. This creates a beautiful three-dimensional effect with a lot of depth and shadow. Also the wide stiles and horizontal rails are almost entirely hand-decorated. Within these, continuous bands of flowers and vines appear against a finely worked background. A closer look reveals just how much artisanal work has been poured into this screen. The four tall panels are crowned at the top by separately pierced floral ornaments. Even the lower open sections are fitted with carved flower motifs and graceful, Orientally formed arches. Probably made from a heavy hardwood, possibly Kashmiri walnut, a wood species traditionally used for the very refined carving typical of this region. Dimensions: Height: about 180 cm Width per panel: about 45 cm Total width fully opened: about 180 cm Thickness of panels: about 4 cm Weight: about 60 kg The screen has a lovely warm patina and signs of use appropriate to its age. In the past, some small portions of the fragile pierced carving were damaged. The missing parts have since been carefully restored, so the decorative whole again looks complete. Old restorations and localized signs of use remain visible and are part of the object’s history. A very imposing interior piece that can be placed as a room screen, room divider, or as an independent decorative art object. Due to the combination of size, weight and particularly deep carving, this is a considerably more valuable piece than the more common, lighter-cut Indian decorative screens. Condition: good antique condition with signs of age and use and restorations; see the extensive photographs for an accurate impression. Because of its size and especially weight, pick-up is strongly preferred."
