SANKYO 451 — Two-Tone Space Age Rolling Drum Clock — 1970s Japanese Design — Original Inspection Stamp A compact 1970s Sankyo Digital Model 451, combining a two-tone plastic case with the distinctive movement of a mechanical rolling-drum display. The underside retains its manufacturer’s label and a Japanese inspection stamp. DESIGN & FORM The low, horizontally elongated body, rounded contours and contrasting colours give this clock a characteristic Space Age appearance. Its compact proportions create a clean, uncluttered silhouette, while the numerical display provides the visual focus. The rotating drums bring an engaging mechanical element to the design: time is displayed through the movement of physical printed numerals. Although often described as a “flip clock”, this is more precisely a rolling-drum digital clock. Its numbers rotate into view on drums rather than being formed by hinged, folding split-flap cards. “Digital” therefore refers to the numerical presentation of the time, rather than an electronic screen. This version has no built-in illumination. SANKYO — JAPANESE PRECISION ENGINEERING Manufactured by Sankyo Seiki Mfg. Co., Ltd., Japan. The original underside label bears the wording “SANKYO DIGITAL CLOCK — MODEL NO. 451” and “TOKYO JAPAN”. Geographical reference shown on the label: Tokyo Metropolis, Kantō region, Japan 東京都・関東地方・日本 “Tokyo Japan” is the geographical wording printed on the manufacturer’s label; it does not, by itself, identify the specific factory where this individual clock was assembled. Founded in 1946, Sankyo Seiki developed a prototype musical movement in 1948 and began mass-producing music-box movements in 1950. The company subsequently expanded into other areas of precision engineering, beginning production and sales of micromotors and time switches in 1959 and developing digital clocks in 1968. The Model 451 belongs to this period of innovation, when Japanese manufacturers combined compact electric mechanisms with expressive modern case designs. The model is documented in a Canadian retail advertisement dated December 1972, confirming that it was already on the market at that time. This establishes the model’s period, rather than the exact manufacturing date of this individual clock. JAPANESE INSPECTION STAMP A circular ink stamp remains visible on the underside, beside the manufacturer’s label. The characters appear to read: 検 下原 The upper character, 検, indicates inspection or checking. The lower characters, 下原, form a Japanese surname commonly read as “Shimohara”. The stamp is therefore consistent with a factory inspection mark, most likely identifying the person responsible for the check: “Inspected by Shimohara”. This is an interpretation of the visible characters; the inspector’s identity and exact name pronunciation have not been independently verified. A small but appealing detail of the clock’s manufacturing history, preserved alongside its original identification label. TECHNICAL DETAILS • Manufacturer: Sankyo Seiki Mfg. It has no cracks or breakages, with some age-related marks consistent with its vintage condition. Please examine the photographs closely for the surface finish and cosmetic details. The clock is working and has kept good time during testing. The accompanying Casio clock shown in some photographs is used solely as a reference to demonstrate timekeeping during the test. Cleaning should not be interpreted as a complete mechanical or electrical overhaul. VIDEO OF OPERATION & TESTING Please view the following video to see the actual clock operating and being tested: https://youtu.be/3j0parRVPhI WHAT IS INCLUDED Only the Sankyo Digital Model 451 clock, with its attached power cable and plug, is included in this sale. The Casio reference clock is not included. Any catalogue pages, historical advertisements or other reference images shown are provided for illustrative and documentary purposes only. No original catalogue, advertisement or printed reference material is included. VMJ VINTAGE — SELLER TERMS FOR FLIP CLOCKS, ROLLING-DRUM CLOCKS & VINTAGE ELECTRICAL ITEMS Testing and vintage condition This is a vintage electromechanical clock, not a newly manufactured item. The description and video document its condition and operation during testing. Age-related wear may be present, and future adjustment, servicing or replacement of ageing components may become necessary. Mechanical operating sounds Electric clock motors and their gear trains can produce a low hum or slight vibration during operation. Additional mechanical sounds may occur as the display advances, particularly when several digits change together. Such sounds can be normal characteristics of these mechanisms and do not, by themselves, indicate a fault. Any known abnormal operation is described separately; this explanation does not cover malfunctioning or damaged components. Voltage and frequency This example is rated for 220V AC, 50Hz. Both voltage and frequency must be appropriate for correct operation and timekeeping. A plug adaptor changes only the plug connection; it does not convert voltage or frequency. A conventional voltage transformer does not change the supply frequency. Handling and setting Please handle the clock and its setting controls gently. Do not force the controls or move the numbered drums by hand. Disconnect the clock from the mains before cleaning or inspection. Internal electrical work should be carried out by a qualified person. Packing and dispatch The clock will be checked and its operation documented before dispatch. It will be carefully protected and double-boxed, with the packing process photographed. Photographs, video and description The photographs, demonstration video and written description document the actual item, its appearance and its operation during testing. By placing a bid, the buyer acknowledges that they have reviewed all photographs, watched the demonstration video and read the complete description, including the condition details, technical specifications, contents of the sale and VMJ Vintage seller terms.
