Notes on the Life and on the Several Imprints of the Work of Thomas Rickman, F.S.A., Architect, Thomas Miller Rickman â" 1st Edition Publication: London, George J. W. Pitman, 1901 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 89. Condition Report: Very Good. The maroon ribbed cloth binding remains structurally tight and square with bright, unoxidised gilt titling to the spine. The blind-stamped paneled boards and corner palmette motifs are remarkably well-preserved, though there is some light bumping to the spine ends and faint corner rubbing commensurate with a volume of this age, firmly keeping it from a higher grade. Internally, the hinges are sound with no splitting or starting to the delicate floral-patterned endpapers. The pages are notably clean and bright, largely free from the foxing that frequently afflicts early 20th-century stock. Crucially, the tipped-in manuscript letter on the front blank flyleaf is securely attached via two neat paper hinges without causing any structural stress to the binding, and the handwritten presentation inscription on the preceding endpaper remains bold and highly legible. Catalogue Note: First edition. An exceptionally scarce biographical work compiled by Thomas Miller Rickman, documenting the life, architectural output, and publishing history of his father, the eminent Gothic Revivalist Thomas Rickman (the architect who famously established the stylistic classifications of 'Early English', 'Decorated', and 'Perpendicular'). This particular copy is made truly unique by its outstanding provenance: it bears a contemporary presentation inscription and a tipped-in, original manuscript letter from the author to Thomas Mellard Reade (1832â"1909), the notable Liverpool architect, civil engineer, and geologist. Dated 15 September 1901 on '8. Montague Street, Russell Square' letterhead, the author's letter references their shared time on the Council of the R.I.B.A. (Royal Institute of British Architects) and draws special attention to the book's coverage of the Gothic revival and its connections to the town of Liverpool. Complete with the engraved frontispiece portrait of Thomas Rickman by Cruikshank, this is an invaluable association copy linking two significant figures of 19th-century British architecture, and is practically unseen on the open market. A fascinating insight into one of the most influential figures of the Gothic Revival, this biography, penned by his son, explores the life and enduring legacy of Thomas Rickman. Best known for establishing the definitive classification of English medieval architecture, Rickman's transition from medicine and accounting to a self-taught architectural master makes for a compelling history. This volume meticulously documents his prolific career, from his pioneering cast-iron churches in Liverpool to his definitive published works, offering an essential resource for architectural historians and enthusiasts alike.
