全部拍賣 / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Famiano Strada (Famien Strada) - Histoire de la guerre de Flandre: 2 VOLUMES

ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF THE HISTORY OF THE WARS IN FLANDERS, LOW COUNTRIES, THE NETHERLANDS, CRIMINAL TRIALS, SPANISH NETHERLANDS, WAR HISTORY, LAW by Famiano Strada, also known as Famien Strada (1572–1649) was a historian, and teacher of rhetoric at the Collegio Romano in Rome, a Vatican university. This supplement to the work "Guerres Civiles de Flandre or De Bello Belgico", it is one of the most important contemporary testimonies of the Dutch revolt from Spain and on the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). The economic and religious conflict was one of the causes of the progressive decline of Spanish power and saw the rise of a new state; the Republic of the Seven United Provinces. The two volumes are adorned with four engraved portraits; King Philip II of Spain as frontispiece of the first volume, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo (Duke of Alba) as frontispiece of the second volume, and two portraits of Lamoral, Count of Egmont, and Philip of Montmorency, Count of Horn. This "Supplément à l'histoire des guerres civilis de Flandre" is attributed to the French legal antiquarian and scholar Jean Godefroy, sieur d’Aumont (1656–1732). The two volumes presents documents that were previously unpublished at the time—including the charges verbatim, letters, testimonies, defense arguments, and death sentences—enabling readers to critically examine the legal legitimacy of the proceedings sanctioned by the Duke of Alba. The core legal prosecution documents it prints were originally drafted by Jean Du Bois, the prosecutor general of the Duke of Alba’s tribunal. The raw transcripts preserved in these volumes provided essential source material for subsequent Enlightenment thinkers and 18th-century writers—including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe when composing his celebrated tragedy Egmont (1788). The work is composed of TWO VOLUMES, with the same antique original binding of the time and in very good condition. The primary purpose of this supplement was to publish the complete, unabridged trial records, interrogations, and indictments of two of the most prominent early leaders of Netherlandish resistance: Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522–1568), victor of the battles of Saint-Quentin and Gravelines. Philip of Montmorency, Count of Horn (1524–1568), Admiral of the Netherlands. Both were Catholic nobles and Knights of the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece who opposed Spanish inquisitorial overreach and the infringement of regional privileges. In September 1567, the newly arrived Duke of Alba lured them into custody in Brussels. Alba tried them before the Council of Troubles (Conseil des troubles, or "Blood Council"), ignoring their ancient feudal right to be judged solely by fellow Knights of the Golden Fleece and the King. Found guilty of high treason and rebellion, both men were publicly beheaded on June 5, 1568, in the Grand-Place of Brussels—an act of terror that turned simmering unrest into open war. Famiano Strada's history (De Bello Belgico / Histoire de la guerre des Païs-Bas) was admired for its epic prose and access to the papers of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Governor-General of the Netherlands, but it offered an intensely royalist, Counter-Reformation narrative and omitted the legal paperwork of Alba’s repression. Since 1700 historians and jurists across Europe were prioritizing primary legal records over rhetorical histories. Publishing the word-for-word charges, witness testimonies, defenses, and death warrants allowed readers to scrutinize the judicial legality of Alba's proceedings. AUTHOR: Famiano Strada, also known as Famien Strada (1572–1649) was a Jesuit, historian, and teacher of rhetoric at the Collegio Romano in Rome, a Vatican university. The original work of Strada was commissioned and bankrolled by the ducal House of Farnese (specifically Duke Ranuccio I and later Duke Odoardo). The Farnese family granted Strada direct access to the private papers and correspondence of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma and Governor-General of the Netherlands, as well as those of his mother, Margaret of Parma. Because of this privileged access, Strada had command of primary military dispatches and diplomatic correspondence that Protestant historians could not view. In exchange, the narrative functioned as an elaborate monument to Alessandro Farnese's military exploits.
