全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / Extraordinary Large Syrinx Aruanus Shell - Magnificent...
The largest living gastropod shell by notable dimensions — This specimen of Syrinx aruanus, commonly known as the 'Australian Trumpet', stands out for its imposing size and exceptional state of preservation. Measuring an impressive length of 453 mm, it presents itself as a true natural sculpture, whose harmonious curves and warm coloration make it an extraordinary piece for display. The exterior surface flaunts a palette of tones ranging from ivory to golden cream, with hints of apricot and pale orange, enriched by peach and light terracotta bands along the keels and on the underside of the large whorl, all of which emphasize the depth and three-dimensionality of the shell. The name Syrinx, of Greek origin, evokes images of flutes and tubular structures, a designation altogether fitting for this shell whose architecture is defined by a broad central body, a whorl that rises like a tower, and an elongated siphonal canal. This species, the sole member of the genus Syrinx and belonging to the family Turbinellidae, holds the record for the largest external shell of a living gastropod, making it an icon and a coveted objective among malacology collectors. The fusiform shape of Syrinx aruanus results from precise biological needs. The broad last whorl protected the mollusk's body, while the long siphon in the lower canal was essential for exploring the surrounding environment. A specialized predator, it lives on sandy and muddy bottoms, feeding on polychaete worms through an extensible proboscis. This shell is therefore not merely an object of beauty, but a tangible testament to evolutionary engineering and sophisticated marine ecology. For the collector, this specimen represents not only a piece of natural history, but also a work of art created by nature. Its proportions allow detailed observation of the progression of the whorls, the keels, the surface sculpture, and the broad aperture. Its aesthetic versatility makes it suitable for any setting: standing vertically, it rises like an organic tower; horizontally, it reveals its inner spiral and the surface complexity. It is an ideal piece to enrich a Wunderkammer, a library, a natural history cabinet, or a contemporary environment seeking a touch of elegance and originality, celebrating the meeting of biology, geometry, and color.
