EVANS (Walker) — An Alabama Record Malibu, The J. Paul Getty Museum, 1992. Square in-8 booklet, paperback, cover illustrated with a photograph by Walker Evans, black-and-white illustrations. This is the catalog for the exhibition *Walker Evans: An Alabama Record*, held at the J. Paul Getty Museum from April 7 to June 21, 1992, and curated by Judith Keller. The exhibition featured approximately 45 photographs by Evans devoted to Alabama. It is of great bibliographic interest, despite the publication’s modest physical format. The catalog is entirely devoted to one of Walker Evans’s seminal bodies of work: his photographs taken in 1936 in Hale County, Alabama, among sharecropper families, as part of his collaboration with James Agee. This project was originally intended for publication in *Fortune* before becoming *Let Us Now Praise Famous Men* (1941), one of the landmark works of American documentary photography. The publication is also unusual: it is not a standard commercial monograph, but a small brochure published specifically by the Getty for the exhibition. A specialized bibliography describes it as an 8-panel brochure, measuring 8¾ × 8 inches, illustrated with 5 halftone reproductions. Cover is soiled and rubbed; scuffs and small stains; fairly visible brownish halos/stains in the upper right corner; small tear or weakness along the top edge; signs of wear and old pencil annotations.
