Eugène Brands (1913-2002) - Night, a cosmic secret, 1984

This expressive, abstract painting by Eugène Brands is characterized by a lively interplay of color, light, and movement. Against a deep black background, large cloudlike forms unfold in soft shades of white, cream, pink, and yellow, alternating with strong accents of blue and red. The loose, spontaneous brushstrokes and the layered paint give the work a dynamic and almost dreamy look. The light shapes seem to float in a mysterious, boundless space, evoking associations with the universe, mists, and cosmic phenomena. The strong contrast between the dark background and the luminous color fields creates a special sense of depth. The painting reflects Brands’ fascination with the unknown, imagination, and the mysterious forces of nature. His intuitive way of painting invites the viewer to freely associate and discover their own meaning in the abstract forms. He initially trained as an advertising designer but soon chose an independent career as a visual artist. In 1948 he joined the Experimental Group in Holland, from which the famous CoBrA movement emerged. Although his involvement with CoBrA was brief, he played a significant role in the development of experimental art in the Netherlands. His early work was influenced by Surrealism, while in the 1950s he drew inspiration from the unselfconscious drawings of children. From the 1960s, Brands developed a wholly own, lyric-abstract painting style, in which color, light, and movement are central. Above all, his fascination with the cosmos, nature, and the mysteries of existence provided an inexhaustible source of inspiration. His paintings are characterized by floating forms, subtle color transitions, and a poetic, almost spiritual aura. Under the motto Panta Rhei, meaning ‘everything flows’, he expressed the constant motion and change of life. Brands died in 2002, leaving a versatile body of work that occupies a special place in Dutch modern art. Viewing possible.
