Important work of applied mathematics of the XVIII century, prepared by Étienne Bézout, French mathematician and member of the Academy of Sciences. The course, intended for the training of officers of the Artillery Corps, constitutes a significant testimony to the diffusion of mathematics, geometry, mechanics and their military applications in the Enlightenment era. The lot comprises three volumes of the same Paris edition of 1797, preserved in uniform original bindings in blue paper-covered boards, with original spine labels. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL COMPOSITION AND COLLATION VOLUME I – Arithmetic, geometry and straight-line trigonometry Small title, printer’s imprint and “Avis au Libraire” printed on the recto and verso. First section: 200 pages numbered, followed by the Table des Principes of VIII pages. Second section: geometry, with autonomous pagination of 289 pages and final blank verso. Total 198 type leaves. 6 folded engraved plates, numbered I–VI (Mechanics, Part One). VOLUME IV – Applications of mechanics to motion and equilibrium Small title and frontispiece. Text numbered up to page 481, with a printer’s errata on the verso of the last page. Follows a sheet with the index of fascicles on recto and blank verso. Collation: [4], 481, [1 errata page], [1 index sheet, verso blank]. Signatures: π² A–I⁸ K–T⁸ V–Z⁸ Aa–Gg⁸ Hh². Total 244 type leaves. 13 folded engraved plates, numbered I–XIII (Mechanics, Second Part), in addition to the folded ballistic tables. ILLUSTRATIVE APPARATUS Overall 25 folded engraved plates, with numerous geometric figures, mathematical diagrams, machines, pulleys, gears, lifting systems and other mechanical devices. The engravings, clearly executed, retain wide margins and show slight stains, creases and normal signs of use. Of particular interest are also the ballistic tables in Volume IV, relating to the applications of mathematics and mechanics to artillery. BOUNDING AND CONDITION The three volumes preserve their original rustic bindings from the period, uniform, in blue paper-covered boards, with original spine labels, now heavily worn, with gaps and illegible. The bindings show widespread abrasions, rubbing, missing covering material, edge wear, and particularly pronounced deterioration of the spines. The boards are still securely attached to the volumes. Examples in-barrel edges, with wide margins not trimmed and irregularly cut edges. Internals generally well preserved, with minor stains, yellowing, creases and occasional marginal defects. Specific defect of Volume IV: the presence of a woodworm hole in the first several leaves, from the title page to page 12, located outside the printing area and without affecting the text or content. The defect is documented in the photographs. The original bindings are preserved in their current condition, with no restoration interventions performed by the seller. COMPLETENESS The three volumes have been physically collated and are complete individually, with signature sequences and pagination checked and all 25 folded engraved plates numbered as present. The lot includes only volumes I, III and IV of a four-volume work. Volume II is absent. This is therefore not the complete work. The photographs are an integral part of the description and document the actual condition of the copies.
