Enzo Cangi was born in Pieve Santo Stefano, in the province of Arezzo, in 1938 and passed away in Florence in 1974. His artistic formation took place first at the Art Institute of Florence and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in the same city under the guidance of Primo Conti. Cangi’s research was distinguished above all by the development of a brushwork that begins as post-impressionist but comes to imbue the depicted objects with existential vibrations. In this sense a secure model of reference would have been Giorgio Morandi, as we can sense from his rich output of still lifes of vases and bottles. In Cangi’s paintings there is also a profound rational sense of composition, reduced to the minimum and lucidly calculated, which certainly looks toward Ottone Rosai. The spare brushstrokes, in addition to building the objects, delineate their shadows with a very lively hatching. In this way the entire composition is charged with a vibrant vitality, perceptible especially in the restless foliage of the trees and in the weeds at the edge of the paving."
