ENGLISH SCHOOL (17TH CENTURY), PORTRAIT OF SIR EDWARD STANHOPE OF GRIMSTONE

ENGLISH SCHOOL (17TH CENTURY) PORTRAIT OF SIR EDWARD STANHOPE OF GRIMSTONE, IN A DARK DRESS EMBROIDERED WITH GOLD, WITH LACE RUFF Oil on panel Dated 'AE DC 1599' (upper left) 89 x 71.5cm (35 x 28in.) Provenance: Probably painted for the sitter and by descent to Frances Stanhope (d.1623/4), wife of Patrick Maule, 1st Earl of Panmure (1585-1661), and by descent through the Earls of Panmure at Brechin Castle, until 1782 when it passed by inheritance to, George, 8th Earl of Dalhousie (1730-1787), Brechin Castle, and by descent until, Simon Ramsay, 16th Earl of Dalhousie His sale, Christie’s, London, 25 October 1957, lot 80 (as a portrait of Thomas Stanhope) Sale, Christie’s, Hopetoun House, The Properties of the Marquess of Linlithgow, removed from Hopetoun House, the Earl of Dalhousie, removed from Panmure House, 20 July 1993, lot 521 (as a portrait of Francis Stanhope) Although traditionally identified as a portrait of Thomas Stanhope of Grimston (1540-1596), the date of 1599 would suggest his brother, Sir Edward Stanhope (1543-1603), was the more likely sitter. Moreover, it was through the marriage of Edward’s daughter, Frances, to Patrick Maule, 1st Earl of Panmure, that this picture presumably passed down through the Earls of Panmure and then the Earls of Dalhousie at Brechin Castle (see provenance).
