Aquamarine is the blue variety of the mineral beryl, to which the emerald also belongs. However, while emeralds have been sought-after and valued gemstones for centuries, aquamarines only became a real fashionable stone in the early 20th century. New discoveries in Brazil contributed to this, as did the introduction of electric light, as this is where aquamarine really comes into its own. Numerous publications from the early 20th century refer to this property of aquamarine: "All beryls are very brilliant in artificial light and are therefore desirable stones for the evening," wrote Helen Bartlett Bridgman in 1915, for example. These earrings from our workshop pay homage to the Art Deco era, when electric light illuminated the cities, their bars and cabarets at night. The design is correspondingly graphic and almost architectural. Long pendulums are movably attached under easy-to-attach leverbacks. A sparkling brilliant-cut diamond sets the first point of light. The highlight is then an intensely blue aquamarine in a step cut. Its cool shine wonderfully complements the white light of the diamond and the bright shimmer of the white gold from which the earrings are made. We had the pair cast in white gold using an old technique in southern Germany. The diamonds, like the white gold, we sourced from vintage pieces of jewelry. The aquamarines were set into the earrings by hand here in Berlin.
