Elegant Curved Horn Porridge Spoon – Oromo Type –...

Elegant Curved Horn Porridge Spoon – Oromo Type – Ethiopia – 25 cm Origin: Ethiopia People / Region: Oromo cultural area (attributed) Type: Traditional horn porridge spoon Material: Horn Dimensions: Length 25 cm Period: Presumably mid-20th century Provenance: Personally collected in Ethiopia by the present owner in the early 1990s A particularly elegant traditional Ethiopian porridge spoon carved from horn, distinguished by its pronounced curvature, finely engraved decoration and beautiful warm reddish-brown patina. Measuring 25 cm in length, this example is especially attractive for the remarkable fluidity of its silhouette. The elongated, shallow bowl extends into a gracefully curved handle, which gradually tapers towards a narrow, pointed extremity. The pronounced arch gives the entire object a striking sense of movement, almost suggesting an abstract animal form. The transition between the bowl and the handle is particularly well executed, with a distinctive carved notch and several bands of finely engraved geometric decoration. Crosshatched patterns, intersecting diagonal lines and parallel rings provide a subtle ornamental rhythm without interrupting the elegance of the overall design. The horn displays a magnificent warm patina, ranging from rich reddish-brown to lighter amber tones, with natural variations, fine surface marks and a soft sheen developed through age and handling. The contrast between the generous curvature of the bowl and the slender, delicately worked handle gives the piece a remarkably refined sculptural presence. An especially attractive example of Ethiopian functional art, combining graceful proportions, understated decoration and the natural beauty of the material. Cultural context Horn spoons have a long tradition among the Oromo communities of Ethiopia, where they form part of everyday domestic equipment. Known as Fal'aana Gaafaa, these utensils were traditionally used for eating and serving food, particularly marqaa, a porridge commonly prepared from barley and enjoyed with butter. The Oromia Tourism Commission documents these horn spoons in its presentation of traditional Oromo tableware and food culture. Their elongated bowls, curved handles and occasional geometric engravings demonstrate the close relationship between practical function and refined craftsmanship. Comparable examples, notably from the Jimma region of southwestern Ethiopia, display similar proportions, carefully worked horn surfaces and engraved decoration at the junction of the bowl and handle. The present example shares these characteristics, although its precise regional attribution remains undocumented. The graceful curvature, finely incised ornament and beautifully aged surfaces make this spoon a compelling expression of traditional Ethiopian vernacular design. A Personal Note We have a particular affection for this spoon. Its extraordinary curve has something of the grace of a bird in flight, while its delicate engravings reveal a genuine concern for beauty in the simplest gestures of everyday life. It was made to eat porridge. It could just as easily be admired as a sculpture. We find that rather wonderful. Condition Very good overall condition for an object of this presumed age. The horn retains its elegant form and beautiful warm patina, with minor scratches, abrasions, rubbing and small surface irregularities consistent with age and use. The incised decoration remains clearly visible. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description. Included The horn spoon only. The transparent photographic supports visible in the photographs are not included in the sale.
