Duck decoy - Antique Wooden Mallard Duck Decoy –...

Beautiful Vintage Wooden Mallard Duck Decoy – Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted – Circa 1940s–1950s A beautiful and highly decorative vintage wooden duck decoy, traditionally carved and hand-painted, featuring a wonderfully preserved aged patina and an exceptionally attractive combination of colours. Dating approximately from the 1940s–1950s, this charming piece represents a stylised male Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos), distinguished by its deep emerald-green head and breast, warm ochre-coloured bill, rich brown back and beautifully decorated wings. Craftsmanship and Historical Background Wooden duck decoys have a long tradition in European and North American hunting culture. Originally developed to attract wild waterfowl to lakes, rivers and marshlands, these objects gradually became appreciated as examples of traditional folk art and rural craftsmanship. This particular example displays the characteristic simplicity and expressive sculptural qualities associated with traditional wooden decoys. The body has been carefully shaped from wood, with a rounded breast, gracefully curved neck, elongated silhouette and individually formed wooden bill. Particularly striking is the original-looking hand-painted decoration of the wings, featuring a beautiful combination of ivory white, black, golden yellow and warm brown tones. The back is decorated with numerous small, individually painted feather markings, creating an attractive contrast with the deep green of the head and breast. The visible brushstrokes and subtle irregularities in the painted decoration give the piece a distinctive handcrafted character. Original Patina and Condition One of the most appealing features of this decoy is its beautifully aged surface. The paintwork displays natural wear, gentle fading, small marks and variations in colour, creating an authentic vintage appearance. The green tones have developed a particularly attractive, muted finish, while the contrasting wing decoration retains much of its visual impact. The underside reveals an unpainted wooden surface with clearly visible grain, natural signs of ageing and a rich dark-brown patina. No manufacturer's marks, metal weights or anchoring fittings are visible on the underside. The construction details and visible joints are consistent with the object's traditional handcrafted character. The piece is presented in its existing condition, without cleaning, repainting or cosmetic restoration by the present owner, preserving its attractive aged appearance. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
