Door - 1800-1850 - Bifacial

This solid wood rectangular door, entirely handcrafted, is vertically structured into four large stacked rectangular panels, framed by thick dark wood battens that create a Renaissance-inspired, coffered effect. Each panel presents a cream/ light ochre background, on which geometric, heraldic, and zoomorphic motifs are painted in dark green, brown, and antique gold tones: Panel 1 (Top): In the center there is a stylized radiant sun enclosed in an octagonal medallion. The four corners of the panel are enriched with symmetrical vegetal details. Panel 2 (Second): It houses a heraldic emblem with a spread-wing eagle, placed inside a perfect circle. The central medallion is flanked on the right and left by two vertical bands decorated with vine motifs and continuous scrolls. Panel 3 (Third): It shows a complex geometric composition centered on a finely decorated central lozenge (diamond), accompanied by two small circular motifs in the shape of an eye or button on a dark dotted background. Panel 4 (Bottom): It depicts a deer or quadruped lying side profile, set within a horizontal cartouche with beveled corners. The rest of the space is filled with symmetrical foliate volutes. The entire painted surface features an antique, patinated finish, with slight abrasions and dark shading along the panel edges that simulate the wear of time and the appearance of a historical artifact. This door presents rich grotesque decorative painting, a classical ornamental style inspired by Italian Renaissance motifs, characterized by the fusion of anthropomorphic, vegetal, and geometric elements arranged in a vertical “candelabra” symmetry. Here are the main visual details of the decoration: Central Figure (Term) or Caryatid: At the center stands a nude female half-figure emerging from a volute pedestal, with the lower part of the body transforming into geometric elements decorated with motifs reminiscent of peacock feathers or multicolored scales (in shades of blue, green, and gold). Her arms are outstretched, supporting filaments and garlands. Vegetal Elements and Fruit: Above the figure’s head develops a large, richly laden composition of acanthus leaves, festoons, and baskets full of fruit (such as pomegranates and citrus), classic symbols of abundance and prosperity. Fauna: At the sides of the central figure, integrated into the grapevines, are small birds with golden plumage facing upward. Upper Framing: The upper part closes with an arched structure formed by concentric circular medallions and geometric elements that frame a leafy crown with ears of wheat. Base and Inscription: The figure rests on a classic architectural pedestal. At the bottom of the door one glimpses a dark horizontal band in which a Latin capital inscription is partially legible, where the word “ANNO” is clearly recognizable, typical of dating works of art. Style and Finish: The work has the appearance of an ancient fresco or tempera painting with an aged surface, marked by a slight craquelé texture and flaking that give the door a rustic and historic charm.
