He developed into a versatile visual artist: draftsman, painter, graphic artist, bookbinding designer, sculptor, ceramicist and photographer. In addition to being a practicing artist, from 1970 to 1976 he was associated as a lecturer of monumental art at the Art Academy of ’s-Hertogenbosch. Elffers received the Staatsprijs voor Typografie for his typographic work. Works by Elffers are among others in the collection of the Jewish Historical Museum. Elffers was also involved as a designer with the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, both regarding the museum’s graphic design and the museum displays. He married in 1941 the photographer Emmy Andriesse (1914-1953) and remarried in 1954 to Mien Harmsen (1915-2000). He is the father of writer, visual artist and illustrator Joost Elffers. Graphic artist. Elffers oversaw for 16 years (from 1958 to 1973) the graphic design of the tri-monthly, English-language magazine Delta - a review of arts, life and thought in the Netherlands. Elffers was also, from 1961 to 1973, when the magazine was discontinued, one of the editors. In a monographic overview in the winter issue 1964-65 of Delta entitled Dick Elffers, An Art of Creative Arrangement, Lucas van der Land gave an overview of Dick Elffers as typographer, poster designer, painter, sculptor and spatial artist. In the magazine’s final issue (winter 1973-74) Dr. G.W. Ovink highlighted the work of Dick Elffers as graphic designer of the magazine, particularly the covers, which enjoyed great renown. Together with the writer Bert Schierbeek he produced the book Op de bodem ligt lettergraniet en spreekt klare taal, a dialogue between word and form. [2] The Golden Age exhibition, about the highlights of a hundred years of Dutch graphic design, in 2008 and 2009 devoted ample attention to Elffers’ work. In 2008 this exhibition was shown in Bucharest, Sofia, Budapest, Madrid and in the Graphic Design Museum in Breda.
