DENMARK. Penny, ND (1080-86). Lund Mint. Canute IV (Knud d. Hellige).

Remarkably pedigreed, very rare and numismatically important. DENMARK. Penny, ND (1080-86). Lund Mint. Canute IV (Knud d. Hellige). NGC AU-58. Hauberg-2; not in Hauberg Collection; Poulsen-SK2; Ramus -; Bruun-2001; Weight: 0.87 gms. Moneyer: Bosi. A magnificent specimen with exquisite details and a striking portrait This type, which is unique within private collections and of the utmost rarity overall, ranks among the most intriguing coins from this period in the Bruun Collection. The type was introduced under Cnut's older brother, Harald Hen, but is known exclusively from Zealandic Mints. Under Cnut, the moneyer Bosi struck an iconographically equivalent type in Roskilde, and it is conceivable that this represents an unfulfilled attempt to introduce a unified coinage across Scania and Zealand. The remarkable English provenance from two of the greatest English collectors of the 19th century is due to the reverse inscription's indication of the Lund mint being mistaken for London. Estimate: €10,000 - €15,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Hyman Montagu Collection (London - 1896) Lot # 47 (illustrated Pl. 1). Ex: William Brice Collection (Private Sale - 1887).
