DENMARK. Penny (Bracteate), ND (1146-57). Horsens Mint. Sweyn III

Delightful Bracteate from an Excessively Rare Mint DENMARK. Penny (Bracteate), ND (1146-57). Horsens Mint. Sweyn III (Svend Grathe). Uncirculated, glued to ticket. Hauberg-6; Hauberg Collection-1425; Poulsen-JY21.4; Bruun-2231. Of the utmost rarity and the only coin type to ever have been minted in the city of Horsens. Beautiful specimen with a lovely toning and a delightful portrait of the hook-nosed king. Founded in the Viking Age as a protected trading post at the end of the fjord, Horsens grew into a significant medieval town. Its name derives from the Old Norse Hrossanes, meaning "the headland of horses." By the mid-12th century, the town's economic and strategic importance was cemented when a royal mint was established under King Sweyn Grathe. NGC "Not Encapsulated--Residue". Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Øster Uttrup Hoard (1696 and 1708). To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E.
