DENMARK. Gold Medal on the Queen Dowager, 1560. Copenhagen. Frederik

Early Wearable Gold Medal of the Utmost Rarity and Importance DENMARK. Gold Medal on the Queen Dowager, 1560. Copenhagen. Frederik II. NGC VF Details--Tooled. Galster-14; JS-136; Bruun-15227. Weight: 7.00 gms. Engraver: Jacob Binck. This cast gold medal, of 2-Ducat weight, is fitted with a contemporary suspension loop. It bears distinct signs of wear, as was evidently intended. Of the utmost rarity and historical importance. Queen Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg (1511-1571) was a powerful Danish Renaissance queen and wife of King Christian III. A staunch Lutheran, she spearheaded the Reformation in Haderslev before its official Danish adoption in 1536. As queen, she managed a vast royal household and secured the dynasty as the mother of King Frederik II and Duke Hans the Younger. In her influential dowager years, she transformed Koldinghus into a modern palace, founded local social institutions, and engaged in fierce political rivalries with her son. She rests today in Roskilde Cathedral. Estimate: €8,000 - €10,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
