DENMARK. 2 Ducats, 1701. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik IV. PCGS MS-62.

Marvelous Colonial Double Ducat DENMARK. 2 Ducats, 1701. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik IV. PCGS MS-62. Fr-243; cf. KM-476; Hede-10; Sieg-50; Schou-2; Kold-154; Bruun-7306. Mintmaster: Christian Wineke. Engraver: Anton Meybusch. An EXTREMELY RARE type with only a few examples trading at auction in recent decades, this 2 Ducats stands as one of the most popular and desirable of issues of Scandinavia, given its phenomenal design and links to the Danish colonial empire. The reverse depicts the Danish fortress of Christiansborg on the African "Gold Coast" (now Ghana) as viewed from the Gulf of Guinea, with the accompanying legend, "CHRISTIANS:BORG IN GUINEA". This design highlights Europe's colonial interactions with West Africa, with a significant amount of the gold used in European coinage being sourced from this region; indeed, the name of the British "Guinea" denomination arises from this territory. Most survivors of the type exhibit wear and major surface issues such as bending; the present example is an exception and stands easily as the finest certified at either NGC or PCGS, besting the hitherto-finest certified Bruun specimen by two full points. Likely struck from fresh dies, with a simply magnificent strike that highlights every curl of the portrait in crisp relief, the matte-like design details standing out in crisp contrast to the watery semi-Prooflike fields beneath. A true wonder coin of Danish numismatics that could easily serve as a centerpiece in a collection of Scandinavian coinage. Includes old collector tag. Estimate: €20,000 - €30,000. “NOTICE TO EU BUYERS: This lot is temporarily imported into Denmark and, following the auction, must be returned to the United States to close the temporary import. If purchased by an EU buyer, the lot may subsequently be shipped from our California office to Europe; all applicable import VAT, Margin Scheme “brugtmoms”, duties, customs charges, and related fees will be the responsibility of the buyer.” Click here for certification details from PCGS.
