DENMARK. 2 Christian d'Or, 1867. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IX. NGC MS-67.

Superb-Gem and of the Utmost Rarity DENMARK. 2 Christian d'Or, 1867. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IX. NGC MS-67. Fr-293; KM-773.1; Hede-1A; Sieg-7.1; Schou-1; Bruun-8283. Weight: 13.28 gms. Mintmaster: Peter Rasmus Hinnerup (RH). Engraver: Harald Conradsen (HC). A captivating Superb-Gem piece that would generate fierce competition no matter the date but as this is the best of most likely only two in private ownership, the stakes are raised to the absolute maximum for a date of this caliber. The first minting of d'Or coinage in Denmark took place in 1771 and 1775 but it is believed to be a coinage for a single specific use in the Duchies. 1826 saw a few Double d'Ors minted, but from 1827 minting took place on a larger scale. The coins, imitating the French Louis d'Ors, were issued solely for international trade, mostly with Hamburg merchants, and were not part of the Danish coin circulation. Except for the 1802 Ducat, d'Or coins were the only Danish gold coins of the 19th century up until the introduction of the decimal coinage in 1873. Estimate: €18,000 - €22,000.
