This beautiful necklace features two deep-purple amethysts in a teardrop-shaped faceted cut, a diamond in a vintage cut, and four additional rose cut diamonds, whose sparkle brings the design to life. It is crafted from gold. An arched centerpiece, with the old-cut diamond at its center, swings from a delicate gold anchor chain. Extending from it are two pendants of different lengths with hidden joints that gently follow the wearer’s movements. Small diamond roses sparkle along the slender bars until they finally culminate in the two amethyst teardrops. The asymmetrical composition lends the necklace a sense of lightness and elegance. The design of a necklace crafted in this manner is known as a “Négligé.” The French word literally means “casual” or “unforced” and describes the intentionally unequal lengths of the pendants, which create the impression of a seemingly random arrangement. It was precisely this playful asymmetry that made the Négligé so appealing and turned it into one of the most popular jewelry styles of the Belle Époque. All parts of the necklace were created in the early years of the 20th century; c. 1910, not only was this style of necklace in vogue, but the cut of the stones and the craftsmanship were also quite common. However, the elements of the necklace did not originally form a single piece of jewellery. They were only combined in more recent times to form a mariage. In any case, the result is stunning: it is light, playful, and incredibly summery. We discovered the necklace just as it is in London.
