David Hume - Essais de morale ou recherches sur les...

Rare edition of this collection which takes part in the great philosophical debates of the 18th century on the nature of the good, the foundations of moral judgment and the motivations that orient human actions - Hume, a major figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, seeks to understand how human beings distinguish praiseworthy conduct from condemnable behavior, without resting all morality on religion, tradition or abstract rational principles - His reflection rests on the observation of human nature, feelings, habits and social relationships, considered as the essential elements from which our moral evaluations are formed - From this perspective, reason allows comparing facts, examining the consequences of actions and determining the means appropriate to an end, but it does not suffice, on its own, to explain why certain actions elicit our approval while others provoke our indignation - David Hume - Essays on Morality or Investigations into the Principles of Morality - 1760 - J.
