The sitters are represented in the refined fashion of the early 19th century: the gentleman in a dark coat and high white cravat, the lady wearing a dark Empire-style dress adorned with lace and jewellery. Both paintings retain their period giltwood frames, richly decorated with classical ornament, giving the pair a particularly harmonious and decorative presence.
