This magnificent object is a traditional carved wooden African mask, belonging to the Bamana (or Bambara) people from Mali. Object features • Mask type: This is a Ntomo (or N'tomo) mask. This type of mask is recognizable by its characteristic crown-like summit structure, formed by several horns (or teeth). • Cultural use: The Ntomo mask was used during initiation ceremonies for young boys within the male secret society of the same name. It symbolizes the transition to adulthood, wisdom, self-control, and the learning of social responsibilities. • Aesthetic details: The face is elongated with a long, fine, aquiline nose. The forehead and cheeks are adorned with fine geometric scarifications etched. On the sides, small fittings hold ornaments made of shells (cowries), which are traditional symbols of prosperity and spiritual connection in West Africa.
