Dame Elisabeth Frink was a British sculptor, draughtsman and printmaker, most well known for her powerful sculptures of animals, birds and the human figure. The theme of horses became a key element of her work, stemming in part from her experience growing up in wartime Suffolk, where she spent time riding, as well as her move to southern France in 1967, where frequent visits to the Camargue region introduced her to its famous semi-wild horses. Frink created horses in an expressive style, using simplified forms and textured surfaces that convey a sense of strength, movement, freedom and vulnerability.
