Magnificent and large ancient bronze sculpture representing a gladiator warrior, signed Émile-Louis Picault. Early 1900s. This gladiator warrior by Émile Picault depicts a gladiator standing, barefoot, holding a chained mace. Made in cast bronze, the chasing work is remarkable, notably in the definition of the torso muscles, facial hair, veins of the hands and arms, creating an impression of fluid movement. Signed on the base “E. Picault.” A piece highly sought after by collectors. An exceptional and remarkable visual craftsmanship and a striking beauty. Émile Louis Picault (24 August 1833 - 24 August 1915) was a famous French Orientalist sculptor, best known for his works depicting allegorical subjects, patriotic themes and mythological heroes. A very prolific artist, he produced numerous sculptures — more than 500 models in total — during his long career.
