Beautiful and wonderfully preserved example of an extinct genus of crinoids, the Crinoidea, named Scyphocrinus elegans. The details of the crinoids are very clearly visible. The dimensions of the crinoid are 22 cm by 9.2 cm. The total dimensions with the matrix included are 25.1 by 22 cm. Crinoids are not plants, as the name “sea lily” might suggest. They are, however, animals that filter water with their flower-like structures to extract nutrients. These sea lilies are fossilized on the walls of horizontal alcoves. To obtain these fossils, collectors must descend up to 20 meters deep into these alcoves. The plates are then loosened with a drill. Usually the fossil plates are brought up in pieces.
