Corinthia, Corinth Diobol Ca. 500-450 BC (No reserve price)

Corinthia, Corinth. Ca. 500-450 BC. Diobol (Silver, 7.69 mm, 0.78 g). Obv: Ϙ. Head of bridled horse to left. Rev: Δ within an incuse square. Reference: BCD Corinth 37. BMC 97. HGC 4, 1881. Rare. Corinth commanded the narrow isthmus linking mainland Greece with the Peloponnese, its two harbours connecting Aegean and western Mediterranean trade. Renowned for commerce and craftsmanship, the city founded colonies including Syracuse and Corcyra. Its silver coinage paired Pegasos, the winged horse associated with the Corinthian hero Bellerophon, with Athena, creating one of the Greek world’s most recognisable currencies.
