全部拍賣 / Asian Art / Clay Foster Turned Wood Bowl on Sculptural Stand - "Obelisk Series"

Clay Foster (American, b. 1954). Wood bowl on wooden and sandstone stand from the "Obelisk Series" n.d. Signed "C. Foster" on underside of bowl. A dark, richly figured turned bowl rests atop a tall pale wooden shaft, the two elements together forming a totemic composition from Clay Foster's "Obelisk Series." The bowl's exterior is etched with a chased chain-link band and a scalloped lower register, its warm chocolate grain punctuated by a repaired split secured with a metal staple and a small brass sheet, a candid record of the wood's living history. The supporting column, roughly hewn with a serrated saw-tooth edge, rises from an irregular slab of sandstone that anchors the piece to the earth. The contrast is deliberate: a refined, blackened vessel poised on raw, weathered timber and unworked stone. Signed "C. Foster" on the underside of the bowl, the work embodies Foster's lifelong dialogue between the lathe's precision and the found character of natural material. Clay Foster (b. 1954, Austin, Texas) is among the most respected figures in American studio woodturning. Largely self-taught after leaving art school, he turned to wood in the early 1980s under the influence of Dale Nish and Bob Stocksdale, first drawing attention with natural-edge bowls turned up to three feet across. His fascination with voids, windows, and portals, seen in the Painted Cave Series, draws on ancient architecture, utilitarian African objects, and natural weathering, and his practice moved fluidly across wood, paint, ink, pigment, wire, grout, and concrete. His institutional record is substantial: American Association of Woodturners member no. 50, a demonstrator at the AAW's first symposium (Lexington, 1987), an AAW board member (1997 to 1999) and Honorary Lifetime Member (2017), founding president of the Southwest Association of Turners, and a longtime instructor and later director at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. His work is held in institutions including the Yale University Art Gallery, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Arkansas Arts Center. Item # 204037
