Classic Vintage Diamond & Emerald Cluster Ring, c. 1970

The entourage ring has enriched the history of jewellery for centuries. The term derives from the French word for “accompaniment” or “entourage” and describes the way a halo of gemstones surrounds a larger centre stone. Such floral-like arrangements have been known since the early modern period. Entourage rings from the second half of the 20th century are usually characterised by a slightly elevated centre stone, which draws even more attention to it. In addition, all the gemstones are typically held by a metal framework of fine prongs, allowing the precious stones to catch and reflect maximum light. The stone presented here in this classic style is a natural emerald weighing just under two and a half carats. Its luminous green is encircled by a halo of high-quality brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of approximately 2.50 ct. In the centre of the wonderfully green stone, one can observe inclusions unique to natural stones, poetically referred to as a “Jardin” or “garden” in emeralds. This small garden of crystalline structures reveals itself under close inspection of the smooth, polished table of the gemstone, evoking the rainforests of South America — the continent renowned for its rich emerald deposits. This emerald is also from Brazil. The entourage ring is a piece that should be included in any collection of selected vintage jewellery. With its vividly coloured centre stone and its beautifully sized diamonds, it is a statement piece that brings joy. We discovered this exquisite ring in Cologne.
