Stunning "Big Beard" Pattern Dollar in Brass An Exalted Rarity Hardly Ever Encountered CHINA. "Yuan Shih-kai/Big Beard" Commemorative Brass Dollar Pattern, ND (1912). Nanking Mint. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. cf. L&M-47 (silver); K-672x; KM-Pn12; cf. WS-0093 (same). An EXCEPTIONAL RARITY from the first year of the republic, this off-metal striking in brass features the slightly facing bust of Yuan Shih-kai, though previous references such as Kann attributed the portrait to then-governor of Kiangsu, Ch'eng Te-ch'üan (Cheng Dequan/程德全). While at first glance, it appears like the other contemporary issues features Li Yuan Hung and Sun Yat-sen, the so-called "big beard" types such as this are almost never encountered, with this cataloger able to trace only one other example of the issue in brass--the Kann specimen. Interestingly, though the two share a composition, they reveal two different likely die states--one with incuse veins on the obverse and reverse leaves (the present example), and one with plain leaves (the Kann example). Furthermore, there are distinct differences with respect to overall crispness and sharpness of certain elements, while there are also subtle die markers that link them. This would indicate that a slight re-working of the dies, in order to make aspects more acceptable, took place during what was already a brief output of patterns. As such, a representative such as this in bronze and with defined leaves can be considered that much RARER than its already excessively difficult and seemingly unparalleled status would first indicate. The Kann example, graded NGC Unc Details on account of some unsightly reverse corrosion, realized $462,000 in July 2023. Though the overall coloring here varies from olive yellow to a darker brown, and though some scattered hints of green and red are observed around the portrait, it nevertheless offers great detail, especially within the namesake beard of type. A phenomenal example that should transfix not just the collectors of Yuan Shih-kai's portrait series and early republican issues, but those of vintage Chinese patterns and colossal crown RARITIES more broadly. Estimate: $200,000 - $300,000. Provenance: From the Liu Mung Wang (汪柳門) Collection. To view all items from the Liu Mung Wang (汪柳門) Collection, click here.
