Coins & Banknotes / CHINA. Silver "Large-Tailed Dragon" Dollar Pattern, Year 3 (1911).

The "Large-Tailed Dragon" Dollar Pattern An Exceptional Rarity that Closes out the Ch'ing Dynasty CHINA. Silver "Large-Tailed Dragon" Dollar Pattern, Year 3 (1911). Tientsin Mint. Hsuan-t'ung (Xuantong [Puyi]). PCGS SPECIMEN-64+. L&M-33; K-226; KM-Pn309; WS-0043; Wenchao-112 (rarity: ★★★). Among the pinnacle with respect to the various patterns design for Puyi's final year as emperor, and of imperial China as a whole, this "large-tailed" design is EXCESSIVELY RARE and important, and shares the stage with RARITIES like the "long whisker" types. While it may not appear as such upon first glance--owing to the fact the it is the overall style of the adopted "dragon in the clouds" circulation issues, as well as the adopted direction of the coiling (as opposed to the "reversed" types, in which the dragon's body forms a "C")--this particular dragon design features an extremely large tail and tassels upon the flying mythical beast, with said tail terminating in no less than 12 distinct spines. On the design that was eventually adopted, the termination of the tail appears more like flames rather than the clearly discernable spines seen here, with the present pattern serving as a bridge between the tail style observed on issues like those from Chihli and the tail style seen on the adopted issues. A simply fantastic and exceedingly exclusive RARITY, with this piece serving as the first such instance of the type in one of our actions. Impeccably struck and wondrously preserved, this specimen dazzles with intense brilliance and glistening surfaces, all while a subtle almond hue is observed throughout. We note the instance of just one other of this type to cross the auction block in recent memory, with a similarly graded example realizing $1.769 million in December 2025. As such, it is dizzying to imagine the heights to which this specimen could reach, given what should be no shortage of connoisseurs seeking this monumental vintage keystone. Estimate: $1,000,000 - $1,500,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
