全部拍賣 / Coins & Banknotes / CHINA. Silver Dollar Pattern, Year 18 (1929). Tientsin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.

Wondrous "Globe and Double Flags" Pattern Dollar One of the Finest Examples Extant CHINA. Silver Dollar Pattern, Year 18 (1929). Tientsin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. L&M-88; K-610; KM-Pn106; WS-0131. A wholly enthralling and tantalizing specimen, this pattern crown represents STUNNING RARITY, so much so that this represents the first such instance of the type in one of our auctions. The obverse features a sublime facing bust of Sun Yat-sen, albeit with Kann mentioning the rendition as being "very remote" from reality. Meanwhile, the reverse displays crossed banners of the Republic of China and the Republic's navy, all set over a view of the globe focused upon the upper half of the eastern hemisphere. Though ultimately unadopted on account of its depiction of Sun Yat-sen, the immense desirability of the type cannot be overstated. Supremely glistening and precisely struck, it offers wonderfully minute detail, even with respect to the individual hairs on the obverse as well as the intricate cross-hatching within the continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia on the reverse. Elevating its tantalizing eye appeal that much more is some alluring cobalt and violet toning peppering both sides. For the advanced connoisseur seeking vintage issues that would be extremely difficult to rival, this exalted specimen should thoroughly transfix, as the ability to encounter another, let alone one so majestic and wondrous, should likely prove to be exceedingly, if not completely, impossible. When the Irving Goodman collection was sold, it was noted that only about 15 pieces were known. Since that time, now some 35 years, only a few have come to light, lending to the remarkable accuracy of Goodman's 1991 estimate. According to author Lin Hsin-chang, who states that approximately 20 pieces are known, about 17 examples of those are in private hands, with about 4 to 5 examples locked away in institutional collections. If the additional 4 pieces of a different design are included, that would bring the total of known example to about 25 pieces. The Northern Expedition, a military campaign of the Kuomintang in 1926 against the Beiyang Government and other warlords, ultimately lead to the capture of Beijing and the reunification of China in December 1928. As Chiang Kai-shek's forces approached Beijing, the infamous Mukden Tiger, Generalissimo Chang Tso-lin, fled the city, but was later assassinated by Japanese extremists. The symbolism depicted on this stunning pattern appears to represent the desired outcome of the military campaign; namely, the portrait of founder Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the crossed flags of the Republic and Kuomintang signaling a united nation, with Beijing being internationally recognized as the capital. To purge the last remaining elements of the Ch'ing dynasty, the newly recognized capital was then moved to Nanjing, the original capital of the Ming dynasty, until the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. Estimate: $1,000,000 - $1,500,000. Provenance: From the Liu Mung Wang (汪柳門) Collection. To view all items from the Liu Mung Wang (汪柳門) Collection, click here.
