The Pattern Dollar of the "Mukden Tiger" A Colossal Keystone for Any Vintage Chinese Collection CHINA. Silver Dollar Pattern, Year 16 (1927). Tientsin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62. L&M-869; K-686; KM-Pn85; WS-0109; Wenchao-899 (rarity: ★★★). No doubt at or near the apex of fabled crowns of the republican era, this Chang Tso-lin (Zhang Zuolin) Dollar pattern is one of the most likely issues to be lacking from even the most advanced cabinets due to its EXTREME and EXCESSIVE RARITY. Exemplifying this fact is the presence of just two others within the PCGS census--one of which, the Peh Family example, a SPECIMEN-63, recently realized a stunning total of $4.32 million in December 2025. On this particular type, the general is depicted in a fairly stern facing view, with an almost vexed aspect to his well rendered countenance; his military jacket is elegantly adorned with floral scrolls and wheat ears rising up both sides. So intricate is the detailing that each of the buttons upon his jacket shows a clear incuse anchor--a stunning degree of miniature artistry. Meanwhile, the reverse parallels the large and small characters crown patterns from four years prior, as well as the 20 and 10 Cents minors from the previous year, in which the new national emblem of the dragon and peacock takes center stage--albeit here in a more reduced nature. Vividly toned, with muted iridescence combining with a pale gray backdrop to create immense character and appeal. Of note, a light toning streak runs horizontally across the central portions of the obverse. However, given the immense difficulty in encountering such a specimen, let alone in the problem-free, advanced state of preservation as is the case here, this aspect serves more as a mark of character and an instant identifier than a distraction. While the opportunity of a lifetime would have seemingly come and gone with the Peh Family example crossing the auction block, a second chance for the many spurned participants has auspiciously presented itself in the form of this majestic specimen. Chang Tso-lin (sometimes known as the Mukden Tiger, the Great Commander or Rain Commander) rose to incredible heights from humble beginnings. Eventually becoming the governor of Fengtien and Generalissimo of the Republic's land and naval forces, he was murdered by Japanese militarists from the Kwangtung Army in a railcar explosion on 4 June 1928. After World War II during the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, former Japanese Prime Minister Okada Kaisuke testified that Chang's failure to stop Chiang Kai Shek infuriated the Kwangtung Army.
