Printed by BWC. This is an extremely elusive design and one we have only handled twice in our long history. This colour trial (labelled as proofs by PMG) also differs from the exceptionally rare adopted design, which is predominantly red, contrasting with this beautiful green and brown design. This AUNC-UNC pair will surely entice collectors, as we've previously only offered the obverse and reverse of this note in different auctions. A significant opportunity to acquire a complete pair, since there are only three colour trial obverses, two colour trials reverses and two fully printed specimens graded by PMG. The Russo-Chinese Bank was formed in 1895 by the French and Russians to help facilitate loans taken by the Qing Government to pay for the indemnities required by the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Its first branch opened in St. Petersburg in January 1896, followed quickly by the Shanghai office in February. The Bank got off to a quick start by handling money from both the Chinese and Russian Governments to construct the China East Railway. By 1902, the Bank became the second largest in China and even opened a branch in San Francisco in 1904. There were 47 office branches in 1907. The Bank merged with Banque du Nord in 1910 to form the Russo Asiatic Bank. PMG Comments "With Specimen Perforation" on both and "Tear" on P-S549p2.
