CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Lot of (2). Netherlands Trading Society. 50 Dollars, 1.1.1922. P-S460p1& S460p2. S/M#S51. Front & Back Colour Trials. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 to Choice Uncirculated 64. A superb 50 Dollar uniface colour trial pair from this increasingly sought-after issuer. (Please note PMG calls this a proof). A fairly large note, predominantly brown on the obverse and blue on the reverse, it features the martial God of Wealth, Zhao Gong Ming, at left. A finely executed vignette of a three-arch stone bridge and sampans is found in the lower centre. PMG Comments "Minor Paper Pulls" on the back proof. The Netherlands Trading Society was founded in 1824 in The Hague by King William I to promote trade and agriculture. Through its expanding trading network, it became increasingly involved in banking operations and eventually opened its Shanghai branch in 1903. Its primary business was in deposits, loans, security trading, and foreign exchange. Issuance of notes commenced in 1909 with the 1, 5, and 10 Dollars, although the banknote issuance of this institution was always rather limited, making survivors rare in today's market and always highly prized.
