Chain Single Albert chain 36 cm

Detailed Description History and Design: Splendid old Single Albert waistcoat watch chain from the late Victorian / Edwardian period (circa 1890-1910). The chain stands out for its sought-after geometrically square Venetian link (commonly known as a book chain), a robust and masculine weave much in vogue at the time. The link structure is partially hollow: a refined technical solution of classical watchmaking designed to offer a massive and elegant visual impact on the waistcoat without weighing down the fabrics. The Photo Shield Medallion (Shield Locket Fob): The true centerpiece of the lot is the magnificent pentagonal shield pendant. It features a beautiful contrast finish: the outer frame is mirror-polished, while the central panel is finely repoussé worked with a dotted geometric motif and raised micro-flowers. The medallion opens via a top hinge, originally conceived as a microscopic private reliquary to hold a portrait or memory. The interior still preserves its brilliant original gilding protected by time. The clasp snaps and is perfectly functional, notwithstanding some light and physiologically superficial dents on the outer structure that attest to its real historical use. Technical Details and Hallmarks: The item bears two small historical/industrial hallmarks partially worn by time (one impressed on the tiny linking ring of the pendant, the other rectangular-shaped mark located on the lower closing rib of the medallion). For maximum transparency and based on analysis of the markings and wear, it should be noted that the material of the object could be gold of very low fineness (even below 8 karats) or a vintage gold-filled/rolled gold. Visual analysis reveals the emergence of the typical genuine patina of time on the outer edges, confirming centennial authenticity and the quality of workmanship, excluding common fashion jewelry. Historical Curiosities: The name of this style owes to Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria of England, who launched the fashion of securing the watch to the lapel with the characteristic T-bar, transforming this instrument into a status symbol. At the time, the use of very hard alloys or thick laminations was a deliberate goldsmith’s choice: it ensured that the links could withstand the daily tension of the watch without wearing down, keeping the chain light and comfortable to wear. The shield medallion was not merely an ornament, but a closely private accessory: men of the era used it to jealously guard small family portraits or lock of hair inside, shielded from others’ eyes. An exceptionally interesting piece for pocket watch collectors or lovers of convertible historical jewelry (also ideal today as a choker or double-turn bracelet). Technical Sheet (Lot Data) • Type: Pocket watch chain with pendant (Albert Chain & Fob) • Era: Late 19th / Early 20th Century (Victorian – Edwardian) • Overall length: about 36 cm • Overall weight: 23 grams • Chain style: Square Venetian link (Book chain) • Included components: T-bar, spring-loaded dog clip, openable pendant. • Hallmarks: Yes, two hallmarks partially worn from use (on the pendant’s linking ring and at the base of the medallion). Given the presence of marks, the item is to be considered gold of very low fineness (even below 8k) or vintage gold-filled of the period. • Condition: Good vintage condition with signs of wear, small dents on the outer surface of the shield and patina consistent with age. The medallion’s locking mechanism and the dog clip spring are perfectly stable and functional. No subsequent soldering, entirely original and contemporary set."
