CEREMONIAL BOWL Melanesia. Withofs (1934–1998), Brussels - Collection of Ernst & Hildy Beyeler, Basel, acquired from Withofs - Acquired from the estate of Ernst & Hildy Beyeler, Basel Exhibition: - Beyeler Gallery, Animal - Art for Tropical Forests, December 11, 2004 – February 26, 2005, illustrated in the exhibition catalog/poster. A rare food bowl carved in the shape of a stylized dog with pricked ears. Although several other examples of canine depictions are known from the Admiralty Islands, they are generally more naturalistic, often heavily decorated, and rest on the dog’s elongated legs. The extreme simplicity of the zoomorphic features, coupled with the ovoid shape and the flat bottom and sides, could indicate a more westerly origin or, perhaps, an influence from Wuvulu Island or the Hermit Islands. Another bowl of similar size, but depicting a stylized fish, is on display in the Thomas Jaffe Collection at the “Hall of the Pacific,” Yale Peabody Museum, Yale University, New Haven, USA.
