Ceramica Zaccagnini - Ugo Zaccagnini - Carafe - Ceramic - Handpainted

Turquoise-cameo ceramic pitcher – Zaccagnini production, Florence Elegant glazed ceramic pitcher from the Florentine manufacturer Zaccagnini, characterized by a refined neoclassical decorative taste, enhanced with gold highlights. The body, with a slender, harmoniously contoured form, is supported by a circular foot and features a wide, ovoid belly from which a long neck extends to end in a flared, characteristic pouring spout. The large, elegantly curved loop handle contributes to the object’s strong decorative valence. The white surface is enriched with gilded ornaments in vegetal motifs and scrolls, arranged symmetrically. At the center of the body stands out the particular decorative element that most characterizes the pitcher: an oval turquoise medallion bearing the profile of a classical female figure, conceived in the style of antique cameos. The medallion is framed by rich gold ornamentation with foliate motifs, creating a refined chromatic contrast between the white ceramic, the turquoise, and the gold. The piece is particularly interesting also for the history of the Zaccagnini manufacture, one of the most important forces in Florentine artistic ceramics of the twentieth century. The workshop was founded in 1905 by Ugo Zaccagnini (1868–1937), who had previously worked as a plaster modeler at Richard-Ginori of Doccia. The first location was in Sesto Fiorentino; in 1912 the business was moved to Florence, where an increasingly wide production of maiolicas, decorative ceramics, vases and furnishing objects developed. Zaccagnini managed to fuse the tradition of great Tuscan ceramics with the new tastes of the twentieth century. In the 1930s the workshop collaborated with several artists and sculptors and gained considerable notoriety even internationally: in 1937 it employed over 120 people and began exporting to the United States. A particularly famous chapter of its history is the collaboration with Walt Disney: from the late thirties, Zaccagnini produced numerous characters from animated cartoons in ceramic, including Pinocchio, Snow White, and the Seven D dwarfs, helping to make the brand very well known also to American collectors. In the postwar period the workshop continued its activities, presenting its ceramics overseas and experimenting in the 1950s with new forms of research, including an abstract production called “Swedish.” The historic Zaccagnini company remained active until its definitive closure in 2000. Excellent condition. Measurements: 37.5 x 15 cm
