全部拍賣 / Miscellaneous / Catalan School (c.1920) - NO RESERVE - Cathedral Interior

1. TECHNICAL DATA School: Catalan School Period: Early 20th century Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions of the work: 35 × 24 cm Framed dimensions: 40 × 30 cm Support: Canvas; features a cardboard backing used as protection/reinforcement, which does not constitute the original pictorial support Signature: Inscription “S. Rusiñol” in the lower left corner. Signature not authenticated and probably apocryphal Condition: Condition in keeping with its age. Minor surface wear, small losses and punctual alterations typical of the passage of time are visible. See the photographs closely, which are part of the description. 2. DESCRIPTION Interesting oil on canvas from the early 20th century representing the interior of a Gothic church, viewed longitudinally through a succession of pointed arches that lead visually toward the altar. The composition is constructed with a pronounced perspective, using the pillars, arches and vaults as depth elements. In the central axis, the altar appears illuminated by small touches of red, orange and blue, creating a focal point within a predominantly grayish and quiet atmosphere. The work preserves an inscription “S. Rusiñol” in the lower left corner. However, there are not enough elements to consider this inscription an autograph signature by Santiago Rusiñol, so it is catalogued prudently as Catalan School of the early 20th century with a probably apocryphal signature. 3. STYLISTIC AND COMPOSITIVE ANALYSIS The work is placed within the tradition of architectural interiors cultivated by numerous Catalan painters during the last decades of the 19th century and the early 20th. The artist pays special attention to the spatial sequence of the building. Gothic arches repeat progressively toward the back, creating a strong sense of depth and monumentality despite the small format. The brushwork is visible, swift and not highly descriptive. The architectural elements are not represented with meticulous drawing, but with chromatic masses in grays, ochres, bluish tones and earth tones. The contrast between the general gloom of the temple and the small luminous points of the altar stands out, drawing the viewer’s gaze. The atmospheric treatment, interest in religious interiors and chromatic simplification place the painting within the Catalan sphere of the early 20th century. 4. PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION The scene conveys a sense of composure, silence and spirituality. The almost total absence of human presence increases the monumental nature of the architectural space. The viewer is visually positioned on the nave axis, as if moving toward the altar. The subdued lighting and muted tones produce an introspective atmosphere, reinforced by the succession of arches and the depth of the space. 5. SIGNATURE AND AUTHORSHIP HYPOTHESIS In the lower left corner there is an inscription that can be read as “S. Rusiñol.” This inscription could be intended to relate the work to Santiago Rusiñol (Barcelona, 1861 – Aranjuez, 1931), an artist who developed numerous architectural and religious interiors in his œuvre. Nevertheless, based solely on the available photographs, the authenticity of the signature or an attribution to the artist cannot be established. For rigorous cataloguing reasons, the work is offered as: “Catalan School, early 20th century. Signed ‘S. Rusiñol,’ signature probably apocryphal.” Any eventual attribution to Santiago Rusiñol would require a specialized study of the work, provenance, materials, signature and direct comparison with documented pieces by the artist. 6. OTHER INTERESTING DATA The painting is executed on canvas. On the back there is a cardboard that acts as a protective/backing element. This cardboard should not be confused with the original support of the painting. The work retains an antique gold-and-dark wooden frame, whose aesthetic is particularly suitable for the historicist and architectural character of the composition. In terms of technique, support, pictorial language and general aging, the piece is compatible with a chronology of the early 20th century. 7. SHIPPING AND CONDITIONS Shipments are carried out by a specialized professional company, using highly protective packaging, custom-made boxes and foam materials adapted to the artwork’s dimensions. We ship worldwide. For large-format works, distant destinations or shipments outside the European Union, there may be additional transportation costs, special packaging, customs or documentary handling fees. Any such possible surcharges will be borne by the buyer. The frame is included as a gift and forms part of the presentation of the work. Due to its decorative nature and its age, no claims will be accepted regarding possible frame damage during transport.
